I've watched the trailer a few times now and I'm still not sure what I think about it.

Looks pretty cool (no sound at work, though, so I'm just going visually). I was hoping (though not expecting) to see the 4 armed green guys, though.

4-armed green guys are a must.

They ruined much of it by including 3D, though.

Bummer.

That's a trailer, and the tone I'm getting from it is based a lot on the music choice. Doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the way the movie will actually play. But I hope they don't go for the doom-and-gloom, self-important tone I seemed to get from the trailer. I'm hoping for swashbuckling.

I love that it takes places in the time period of the original book. Unlike the Asylum movie that came out last year.

It's going to make Pirates 4 look like Pirates 3.

Well, did anyone see this? I've heard pretty good things about it but as usual, my weekend was packed with non-movie going activities.

I know it has nothing to do with anything here...

Or, it had best NOT have anything to do with that. At all.

I saw this, and I really enjoyed it more than I expected to. It was the best Star Wars-type movie since Star Wars. It's a shame that it's doing so poorly in the box office, because I would LOVE if this became a multi-film franchise, but it doesn't look like that's gonna happen.

Also, I'm not at all familiar with the books or comics, so I really don't know how it compares. However, I'm FB friends with Joe Jusko, who illustrates the covers of the John Carter/Dejah Thoris comic series, and absolutely loves the book/characters, and he is very happy with how the movie turned out, and he was pretty vocal about how it wouldn't work before he saw it.

Excellent. It seems to be getting really good reviews/word of mouth so I'm really hoping it makes more money at the box office because I too was hoping for a multi-film franchise.

No classic, but far from the bomb many people were anticipating. I dunno where the fuck the film's bloated budget went (considering 90% seems to have been shot in Utah somewhere...I half expected Chuck Heston to ride through on horseback), but it's solid sci-fi pulp nonsense, with some exciting action setpieces, good special effects and an awesome Michael Giacchino score. Sadly, like most of these fantasy/sci-fi epics, the lead character is the weakest link...I've never seen the Friday Night Lights TV series, but Taylor Kitsch has little screen presence or charisma (and the faux-Eastwood growl doesn't help). Plus, the main human city in the film is called Helium? :noclue:

Still, I had fun with it. Shame Disney so wildly overspent on it...if it were cheap enough to make a profit, I wouldn't mind seeing another one.

Taylor Kitsch is a beast. He was easily the 2nd best actor on Friday Night Lights behind Kyle Chandler (emmy winner). It's not his fault the dialogue isn't that good, did about as good as possible with what he was given.

I enjoyed watching this more than I did The Dark Knight Returns, even though it's not nearly as solid a film. Wish it hadn't bombed as I'd love to see a sequel.

Y'know, that's sort of appropriate. She doesn't really look human.

Same here. Most people who actually saw this seemed to really enjoy it. Would have enjoyed a sequel but I suppose I'll have to read what happens in the books on wiki or actually read the books...ewww

I liked it well enough when I saw it in the second run theatre last year. Bought it when it hit Blu and let it sit on the shelf unwatched until this summer when I decided to revisit it after rereading the first thee Burroughs Mars books. It played a lot better for me second time around. Not sure if that's a function of my familiarity with the movie itself, having details from the books fresh in my mind so I could fill in some of the narrative gaps or simply that movie just plays better on the small screen. It's fast becoming one of my favourite big budget movies of the past few years despite its problems, chief among them a lead actor who is completely miscast in the title role and a framing device that, while necessary to set up the story, seems to eat up more screen time than is really warranted.

Still, kinda love the shit out of this.

Agreed. It gets way more hate than warranted and is better than 90% of the summer action blockbusters from the last few years.

Aside from Taylor Kitsch being woefully miscast, the film is a lot of fun, and deserved better from Disney's anemic advertising department. As far as unreasonably bloated megabudget flops go, it's a damn sight better than the miserable, leaden, mean-spirited Lone Ranger.

Finally saw this.

Enormous box office disaster that word of mouth now says is actually a pretty decent movie that was unfairly slammed by critics and was overlooked by audiences.

That's mostly correct, though don't expect a hidden gem or amazing revelation upon watching it. John Carter is a perfectly fine, occasionally entertaining pulp romp through aliens, super powers, swords, and assorted weirdness, but it never rises to the level of something you want to recommend to others.

Characters are a bit flat and hard to like, story is a bit muddled and unfocused at the times -- the political situation on Mars IS the movie, but it's probably a touch too complex for a summer tentpole -- and the action lacks inventiveness. Oh, and McNulty is a terrible villain.

However, it's got some decent Disneyfied fun (could have used more humor, though), the Princess (played by Wolverine's Girlfriend From Origins) is easy on the eyes, the Tharks are a pretty amazingly realized group of aliens, LOVE the flying ships, and the alien dog is the best thing ever to appear on screen. And the blow job scene is real and unsimulated.

It's a good movie. It was entertaining. It's far from a huge disaster.

I did flag a little in the middle, though. Actually played a game of Carcassonne on my tablet while I watched. No fault of the visuals, setting or action. I just wasn't engaged by the characters, not even the super easy to look at Wolverine's Girlfriend.

But I am glad I watched it. Did so out of semi-morbid curiosity, but ended up liking it just fine. I'd watch a sequel (not that one would ever get made).

A solid 5/10. And that's not an insult.

I don't necessarily recommend it, but I wouldn't steer anyone away, either. Solid pulp adventure made with a gigantic budget. Could stand to be 25 minutes shorter, but otherwise a fine enough way to kill a slow evening.

Good job.

Now you get a cookie.

Seriously, I think it takes a bit of bravado to watch movies that have been slammed.

And it takes balls to watch movies that had been slammed and watch them objectively.
