Seems like a very dumbed down version of an otherwise interesting story.

The Good
Performances are good overall, the sets are spot on. It does pose an interesting premise, future dystopian society playing the part of a utopia.

The Bad
Doesn't really fully create the world it is telling you about, or flesh out the ideas brought forth with it.

The Ugly
Most of it has been done before with slightly different takes, and plays out more like a female fantasy fulfillment than anything deeper. The 'why' behind the central issue that the story creates isn't really explained until the end, for the simple reasons of dramatic effect, and then leaves many loose ends that need to be explained.

Note: We went with 5 other couples and the theater was maybe 25% full, but there was this one seemingly mother daughter set in front of us, and near the end, the daughter actually cried. I did not think the film was that good, but you may cry . . . apparently.

Because she realized she spent her allowance on the ticket.

I'm only interested in this for Kate Winslet and Ashley Juggs.

The trailers were terrible. Made it look like bad teen Sf rubbish. I sometimes like bad teen SF rubbish, but this didn't look like the sort I'd like.

Even if Kate Winslet and Ashley's Juggs are cool.

With the success of the Twilight and Hunger Games series we are going to be seeing a lot of this from now on, they may even start to bastardize certain classics to the cause.

Yeah, I wonder how long before the deluge of YA adaptations begins.

My wife made be binge the first two a few weeks ago...just in time for part three. These aren't horrible at all. Reminded me a bit of Aeon Flux here and there. Certainly nothing original, but it steals from the better Philip K. Dick concepts. Better than Maze Runner, and FAR better than The Hunger Games. If you like Dystopian films, give them a go, and just ignore the sappy love story bullshit thrown in for girls.

I liked the Maze Runner movies more, basically because there wasn't any "sappy love story bullshit", and the first film had a pleasing Twilight Zone-y vibe. They're still not great, but compared to most of these stupid YA dystopia movies, they're agreeable enough. The first Divergent was okay, but the second was typical "let's pad this sucker out" middle-child sludge.

I should add that I was very inebriated, so that may have added to my enjoyment of these films.

Yeah, the 2nd one was a 30-40 minute story dragged out to 90 minutes...but all the females in it are cute, so I let it go. And the setup for part 3 worked - I'm going to the theatre to watch it...so, there's that.

Saw the first because I usually let my yearbook class watch a movie in class when the book's done, and they voted on this. It ain't good. And I was at work, so (mostly) sober.

Are you sure? I looove dystopian films, but the trailers look just awful, and the bits of the concept I've seen sound pretty bad.

Just how drunk were you?

nope, I stand by my decision. Drunk of not, I enjoyed both - but I did watch them back-to-back, and that definitely helped (because the 1st one doesn't have an ending, and the 2nd one starts 5 minutes after the 1st one ends - so it's just one long movie).

Barring that, check out These Final Hours on Netflix. Not really Dystopian, but it's a really decent (albeit depressing) movie about the end of times.
