Seriously. Best movie I've seen all year and rivals Pan's Labyrinth for Del Toro's best piece of work. It's fucking genius.

It's a good sequel to Creature. Are we pretending this is a sequel to Creature from the Black Lagoon?

I also adored this movie (best of 2017 thus far, and I don't see anything unseating it in the next few weeks). The bizarre mixture of genres and tone shouldn't have worked, but they do, to amazing effect.

It totally could be. I mean, I was predisposed to like it because of that but really it's so much more than a Creature movie. I've been wanting Del Toro to make a great movie along the lines of Pan's Labyrinth or The Devil's Backbone for years now. The guy is a master but movies like Pacific Rim or even Hellboy don't show him at his best. They're fun as hell (both Hellboy movies are personal favorites), but I really wanted him to knock another one out of the park. He totally did it with this one.

Eager to see this. Cary's recommendation carries some weight, too, because he's not a jackass like you are, person reading this.

I still resent that you said I had bad taste in films to the 4 other people watching your live-stream. To be fair, I can't remember if that was 3-beer Shoe or 7-beer shoe.

Hold onto that feeling. Let it eat a hole in your belly. Then, one day when the weather is beautiful but it smells like rain is coming, take a trip east and murder me in my driveway.

Did you see this yet, Shoe? My daughter and I are going back for a second viewing this weekend.

Saw this on Saturday with my wife, who liked it, but proclaimed it "weird". Well, yeah it's weird. It's a love story about a mute woman and a fish guy, of course it's fucking weird. But it's also beautiful to look at, sensual, incredibly well written, and acted. The make up and suit that the amazing Doug Jones wears is a worthy companion to the suit in The Creature from the Black Lagoon. best film I've seen in the theater in ages.

My Dad has expressed interest in seeing this, so I may go back for a second viewing later this week. God knows what he'll think about it (he wanted to see The VVitch expecting a straight drama about the Salem Witch Trials, and exclaimed on the way out, "I didn't think there'd be an actual witch!" ).

It's still my favorite movie of the year. Exceptional filmmaking.

I agree. It's my favorite also. I bought the score as well since my daughter fell in love with the music also. I really hope it wins in that category as well. I'm not usually the guy who buys a film score but certain passages got stuck in my head for days after seeing it.

The one scene along the water's edge where they used Snoop's "Gin and Juice" melted my heart.

But it was an orchestral version of "Gin and Juice". More conductors need to look at that approach. There's a whole Wu Tang catalog out there waiting to be adapted to period piece dramas.

I don't think it's happening, but I want this extremely tender, exquisitely filmed, emotional Oscar Bait of a film about fucking a fishman in his fishdick to win all the Oscars. Loved every moment. Cried a bunch of times. It felt like what if Jeunut didn't part ways with Caro when he made Amelie.

However this is bullshit of the highest degree, Hellboy II is the Guillermo Del Toroiest movie that ever Guillermo Del Toroed.

Saw this for a second time with my Dad(!) last week. It holds up beautifully on a second viewing, but my Dad -- while he admittedly liked it -- definitely had some questions.

Surprised no thread bump on this, given the news.

(Arguably) only the second fantasy movie ever to win Best Picture.

First science fiction film to win.

First monster movie to win.

Yeah, I couldn't be happier for Del Toro. Absolutely one of my favorite directors and seeing him win for a movie that featured a monster and was sci-fi in subject matter was pretty cool. I was also stoked that Get Out won for best original screenplay and that Blade Runner 2049 won for cinematography.

Man, I'm seeing a lot of disappointment from people about The Shape of Water winning instead of Get Out.

Now, I said earlier, I'm very happy that Jordan Peele won the Oscar for best original screenplay, but honestly I don't think Get Out was as good as The Shape of Water. Some of the comments I've read say things like Get Out was too bold and controversial for the Academy to vote for.

I disagree. I think it's a great movie but I feel like The Shape of Water is better. I think it looks better and was better directed. I think the Get Out script was stronger in a lot of ways but I'd watch The Shape of Water over and over where after two viewings, I'm good with not seeing Get Out again for a year or so.

I really enjoyed Get Out a lot, but it wasn't Best Picture material. Best Original Screenplay is a worthy award. it did a great job of subverting common tropes and offering some strong social commentary, Peele's screenplay was great, but Best Picture? Nah.

And saying the Academy didn't have "the guts" to give it Best Picture, as io9 claim, when they gave Best Picture to A MOVIE ABOUT FUCKING A FISH MAN, is a pretty stupid argument.

I agree completely. The biggest difference for me (and this is 100% my own tastes coming through) is that Del Toro created a world where the impossible seemed plausible. The Shape of Water brought everything together so well (musical elements, sci-fi, love story, etc.) in a story that still had subversive elements (as you mentioned... fish man fucking) that I don't see how it wouldn't get the nod over Get Out. Plus, it was a movie that was totally in love with movies as a medium. That shit is Oscar catnip.

Please don't turn Shape Of Water into On Golden Pond or Ordinary People.

Don't get insufferable about the win. It will make me avoid this movie for years if that happens.

I was just looking at the Amazon reviews for this, and they're pretty hilarious. Seems the religious folk are very upset about the girl on fish man sex. I guess if it's not man on sheep they get upset.

Too bad the IMDB boards were shut down...it'd be fascinating to read reactions there.

Spotted this on Twitter. Had no idea where to post it, but this seemed like the right thread.

And I had to post it, because that is one sexy woman.
