My girlfriend got me a 4k Blu-ray player for Christmas. Wasn't expecting this at all and I don't have any 4k Blu-rays to play with it. Regular Blu-rays look great, but I would like to get at least one or two 4k Blu-rays. Anyone have any suggestions on best ones to get?

There is a good article written 8 days ago about which ones are great right now along with info on how they were shot and mastered: TechRadar

Bridge On The River Kwai seems like an obvious choice for you.

It would if I didn't already have that deluxe Blu-ray set they released a few years ago. Is the difference going to be noticeable and worth the price to upgrade?

Depends how big your TV is. 4K discs tend to show you a lot more detail than a blu-ray, and that includes every little speck of dust in the original print - but if your screen is too small to show this detail, there's not much point in the upgrade.

What kind of shitty things are movie studios doing to ruin the benefits?

Are studios like fox still applying massive noise reduction because someone out there hates film grain?

NR is still a thing, but the biggest issue is the alteration of colour, to make LCD TVs look better than they really are. The recent T2 is another useless remaster...

That sort of thing drives me nuts because how are we supposed to know which color timing is supposed to be intended?

Well, obviously T2 was always supposed to look like every single movie that has been made since 2004.
