Quote:
There are legitimate reasons to hate Ernest Cline’s bestselling 2011 novel Ready Player One, and many of them are summed up in the paragraph where the teenage protagonist, Wade Watts, describes the virtual car he constructed for himself in the vast online world where he spends most of his waking hours:

The DeLorean came outfitted with a (nonfunctioning) flux capacitor, but I’d made several additions to its equipment and appearance. First, I’d installed an artificially intelligent onboard computer named KITT (purchased in an online auction) into the dashboard, along with a matching red Knight Rider scanner just above the DeLorean’s grill. Then I’d outfitted the car with an oscillation overthruster, a device that allowed it to travel through solid matter. Finally, to complete my ‘80s super-vehicle theme, I’d slapped a Ghostbusters logo on each of the DeLorean’s gull-wing doors, then added personalized plates that read ECTO-88.

That is a lot of very specific verbiage to say two pretty basic things....

If you agree with that sentiment, you might be happy to know a lot of that has been waylaid to the side in the film. Supposedly. According to this one review.

I am excited, with or without the 80s geek culture references (for those of us that lived it, we know how many beatings and how shunned and derided we were during the Golden Age of Geek that was the late 70s through the 80s), I think this story is frenetic and palpable to the senses.

And by the way, an oscillation overthruster is not just an envious item, it is Buckaroo Banzai/theoretical physics fucking cool.

This wouldn't be the first time Spielberg took a piece of disposable genre fiction and made a much better film out of it.

Dude obviously hasn't looked at porn in a long time. There are tons of various types of porn including the "gamer girl" and other types (e.g., Suicide Girls has a lot of non-traditional women).

Seems legit. 12 hours per day for 5 years equates to over 21K hours, which is about twice what many people have set as the necessary time for a person to commit to become an expert in any subject.

Admittedly, the "Gladwell 10,000 Hours" theory has been criticized but for the more creative professions, it does seem to hold fairly true.

I am unfamiliar with any connection between KS and RP1.

Having been a bit too old for RP1 when it was published, I'm astonished to see that. That's some pretty fucking horrible writing.

The book is fairly fun and has an interesting concept, but the pop culture shit gets really tiring, and yes, the writing is basically what you'd find on a message board.

The core story is good, though, so if Spielberg can boil it down to that and limit the pure wankery Cline engages in, the movie will probably be good popcorn fun.

I'm glad to have read it, but I had no desire to check out his follow-up.

It's okay, I will be the only one here happy to see this coming out.

Everyone here makes me sad.

You all are so fuckin' special.

I wish I was special.

But I'm a creep.

I'm a weirdo.

What the hell am I doing here?

I don't belong here.

Which is hilarious considering there doesn't seem to be a single mention of any sort of black culture whatsoever in this book?

Trailer looks awful, and the story seems right out of the save the cat scriptwriting class.

But the Iron Giant is in this. At least for 4 seconds of the movie. So I have to go see it.

Deployed strictly as a weapon, which was the exact opposite of what The Iron Giant was about.

To the best of my recollection, Iron Giant had multiple defensive and offensive capabilities.

So, it wasn't "just about" being docile. It had the capability of fucking shit up.

But, yeah, having an Iron Giant as a weapon would be useless as putting an AR-15 in Gandhi's hands and sending him out to fight for you.

:(

No, it was bad before Brad Bird got involved (and had the script completely rewritten, and all the musical numbers tossed out). This was Warner Bros. original plan for The Iron Giant:

Pete Townshend wrote an entire album about the book that The Iron Giant is based on. WB wanted to make this into a feature film, using the songs as the basis for the script. Luckily, it never got very far.

Why are you down on that, but ok with Ready Player One with 4-seconds of Iron Giant?

I haven't heard the music in Ready Player One yet, but I'm betting it's not as awful as Pete Towshend's garbage (although the trailer does play Rush, so it's probably close). To be clear, I adore stop-motion animation, and that's absolutely not my beef with the music video.
