I had not thought that this show would warrant a thread, but I was proven incorrect when I watched the premiere episode, El Jefe.

A full-blown fun fest.

No spoilers in case you haven't seen it, but Bruce Campbell's not-so-subtle, subtle performance is at an all-time high here as his character is confronted by the past creeping back from 30 years ago.

Pacing was great.

I hope it maintains this path.

Great stuff.

:hole1: :hole1: :hole1: :hole1: :half:

Docked a half hole for not being an hour-long show.

I downloaded it, I will watch it, but the trailers looked embarrassingly low-rent and made me feel sad.

Low-rent? We're talking Evil Dead here -- low rent is one of the charms.

Worry not. It's everything that it needed to be. Everything that makes it Evil Dead is well-represented.

Dutch angles -- check.
Juvenile humor -- check.
Blood by the buckets -- check
Ash is a complete moron -- check.

A few real scares thrown in there, too. One scene in particular towards the end actually made me jump.

The only real question is how the rest of the episodes will play with someone other than Raimi in the director's chair -- Raimi directed the premiere so you essentially got a mini-Evil Dead movie with that one.

They still look like movies, the visual look of the show is like sub-basic-cable bullshit garbage from 2002 ugh. Gross. Awful.

I got through about 10 minutes of the show before having to head to work and they've somehow made Ash Homer Simpson-levels of dumb.

I was having fun with those first ten minutes, but if I was able to choose between a low-rent show on Starz (STARZ IS STILL AROUND? AND THEY'RE MAKING TELEVISION SHOWS?) and nothing, I still probably would have chose nothing.

KILLS me I'm not subscribed to Starz and I have to wait until Blu-Ray for this.

I watched it from my DVR from a direct airing off cable and the actual quality of the images seems on-par with anything on air right now being broadcast.

Granted, it's not film, but the quality of the actual images are clean, crisp, and clear.

Maybe streaming from an online service means they degraded the quality?

But I swear the blacks were black and the gore was sufficiently gory.

In fact, I might have to say the image quality is superior to my collector DVD copy of Army.

I mean, it's fucking clean.

So I don't get your point about image quality.

Considering the show's runtime being close to 30 minutes, it's hard to imagine anyone that is being serious would ever decide to devour this show at the pace of 10 minutes before going to work.

Really?

!!!!!OKAY SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!

Everyone gone that don't to hear this?

Good.

Now the Ash we get at the start is one that has been hiding from himself and from Evil for some 30 years. His only serious ambition is to lay everything with a pulse and tits while doing as little work as possible (including tossing cleaning gloves and instructions to dump the shitter of his trailer off on others).

This is an Ash that is purely out for himself and not really wanting to do anything.

That is the Ash we get introduced to.

The ass-kicking Ash is but a mere shadow, slightly hinted at with his bombastic rendition of Space Truckin' - but never quite there. He's more likely to say "Fuck fighting Evil! I am outta here!"

At the end, we get the Ash we all know and love.

The ride to getting the "real" Ash back is a major part of the fun and a huge part of the reason this episode is a great time.

There are plenty of reasons to hate things, for sure, and this show is no different.

That said, I think there are more than a few reasons that this first show allows fans to embrace it as fun and it seems that the various high marks on review sites seems to back my view.

But, Sam Raimi's involvement as a director will be gone for episode 2 - but he still carries the writer status for at least a few more episodes.

I don't know.

I can't force people to like it - but I do like it.

It's groovy.

Had a blast with this...Campbell looks great and can still pull of the physical demands of the role, and there were plenty of laughs and cheap scares. I'm definitely down for the rest of the series (hope Starz will stream the rest).

I don't mean the literal image quality, my rip's 2.8 gigs or something so the actual quality is outstanding, I think it has more to do with the fact that as television gets more and more cinematic there's this weird, almost Uncanny Valley-type of dead zone where I think unless it has an HBO backing it or even a Hannibal, most television I see these days have an unappealing video quality to me and as more and more movies choose to shoot digital over film I'm seeing the exact same thing.

I just can't stand that weird, vague, almost-but-not-quite-cinematic feel.

ALSO: I turned the show off right before that fucking awesome infinite spinning flashlight scene, which was ffffffuuuuuuuuuckin' DOPE so I'm gonna take back everything I said, everyone can go fuck themselves, I'm gonna go smoke pot and beat off, goodnight everyone.

Like, seriously. The flashlight scene might be my favorite shot in a Raimi project, and the evil doll scene might be my least favorite.

Do you think they're retconning Army of Darkness entirely, or could it be explained in a future episode? I thought it odd that they did a summary of 1 and 2m but skipped over Army entirely.

I read that the Dino Di Laurentiis company owns the rights to Army Of Darkness, so Raimi wasn't allowed to feature references to it.

I had a feeling you would change your mind after seeing that.

Edit: I wasn't as bothered by the doll scene. Basically a big "fuck you" to the Oz thing he did with Disney.

Which is weird because at the end of the first episode we essentially HAVE the Ash from Army of Darkness. Tone-wise, this skews more towards Army of Darkness than anything. It's like AoD with tons of gore.

I was wondering about it since Raimi/Campbell are both pretty lukewarm about AoD, but without knowing it was a rights issue I thought c'mon guys, it wasn't that bad! You don't have to erase it entirely!

So in summation: I'm really excited for more episodes, I have no idea if they can sustain energy for a ten episode series, Bruce Campbell hasn't lost A THING, even when the writing is off, which happens enough to make me feel sad sometimes but otherwise it's solid.

I did laugh and shout EVIL DEAAADDDD when the cop was in the coffee shop dicking around in Plotline C.

You fucking apologistic bitch.

Drown your sorrows in masturbation, go on, do it.

But still, at the back of your balls, you'll know your real failure of not having properly sat down, shut your hole, and opened your bigger hole to allow Raimi access.

It kind of threw me for a loop when Campbell, in the excellent new documentary on the AOD Blu, talks about how the first cut of the movie got slapped with an NC-17. For what?! AOD would easily slide by on a PG-13 today. And nothing in the film indicates to me that there were a ton of gory shots that were trimmed out...Raimi and company seemed to be shooting for a slapsticky PG-13 from the start (much like Peter Jackson with The Frighteners). AOD is one of the lightest R-rated "horror" movies I can think of.

It's one of the few horror movies that my wife will watch - and she HATES horror.

The Raimi stuff plays more like Bugs Bunny than actual horror and I love it.

Especially when large-breasted women are getting boinked in some sleezebag bar restroom. That is just hot.

Oooo-la-lah.

8-)

Finally finished the first season (rationed one episode per day), and thought it was excellent...love the supporting cast, Campbell is on-point throughout, Lucy Lawless looks fucking AMAZING (seriously, she looks barely older than she did in her Xena days), and the gore is plentiful and imaginative. I'll definitely grab the second season when it hits Blu and devour it next Halloween season. 8-)

I watched this a few weeks back all in one sitting. I agree that it was amazing. My favorite episode was the one where he visits the witch doctor and has mind-fuck drug trip. Really looking forward to season two with Lee Majors as his father.

I've finally almost caught up on this. Season 2 is a definite improvement on the already excellent Season 1 (which turned flat-out amazing down the final stretch of episodes)

The Morgue episode from Season 2 had me laughing so hard I nearly pissed myself.

Finished season two (both just got added to Netflix streaming), and though it was a blast. And yes, seeing Campbell getting pulled headfirst into a cadaver's anus was one of the all-time sickest and funniest Evil Dead scenes ever.

Looking forward to season 3. The morgue scene really was Evil Dead slapstick at it's best.

Like, God bless Ash Vs. Evil Dead for putting a giant, uncircumcised cock with a prince Albert piercing on my television, even True Blood didn't even go that far.

Also: goddamn, I'm into super butch Lucy Lawless.

I may buy this on Amazon Prime. But with my work situation cannot do so until I have ground under my feet again.

Season 2 rocked, and Season 3 so far is even crazier.

Finished the last (*sigh*) season on Blu today. What a great show, and sucks that it's over (especially with that "original Army Of Darkness ending" non-resolution), but who ever figured we'd see Campbell in this role again, and that it would have turned out this good? I just wish the show had run long enough to tie into the 2013 remake. Ash & Mia kicking Deadite ass side-by-side would have been something to see.

Still, I'm very happy with what we got, and with 30 episodes, it'd be the perfect length to watch one episode per day through the month of October (which is what I'll probably do next year).
