Agreed, I meant to make a thread on here about it. Watched it all in 2 days, maybe the most 80's show I've ever watched. 10/10

I'll have to give it a shot. I watched Crazy Ex-Girlfriend last night, but didn't really get into it.

Just started this on recommendation of coworker.

The music is very John Carpenter-ish. Like from The Thing.

Definitely a lot of nods to Stephen King's early stuff.

Finished 1st episode and some of second episode yesterday. Good stuff, so far. Real good stuff.

Totally digging the Matthew Modine.

I wonder if he was deliberately made up to resemble David Cronenberg.

My coworker said he reminded him of Ted Danson.

I think he reminds me of Jim Jarmusch the most.

I was trying to hold off and watch this with the Mrs, but watched a little yesterday and realized she will not be into it, no horror for her, so I'll be watching this by my onesies for the next few weeks.

Pfffft. Will be crap. The show doesn't need a second season. They did what they did, and they did it well. It ran its course. The second season will be garbage.

The Duffer Brothers (creators) have been hinting at pretty big plans for season 2. New characters. A deeper look at the Upside Down. Everyone will be back (with one character a big question mark for now). They even hinted at the possibility of the season being longer if the material requires it. They don't seem to be short on ideas, that's for sure.

So, I wouldn't write off season 2 as crap just yet. Season One seemed like it was just scratching the surface for me. It's obvious that they have the long term in mind, including a Harry Potter-style yearly check-in for the core characters as they grow up. And there's plenty of nostalgia-mining to be done in the mid to late 80's.

Haven't watched this yet due to a crazy schedule, but I've caught a little backlash from people who love horror and sci-fi about this show. At first, everyone I know was saying it's fantastic but a few real horror/sci-fi fans have said it was irritating because it basically ripped off its influences too much.

Now I'm not as excited about it as before.

If you can appreciate the aesthetic and not get so wound up in "Seen this before" mentality, you can look forward to it.

There isn't a single original idea in the show. Not one single, solitary thing about it is original. It's all brazenly swiped from other things and they make no effort to hide it.

I don't think that's a flaw. In many ways, it's what's so appealing about the show. It's instantly familiar. It's just a bunch of stuff you already love in a well-done package.

Interesting way to look at it. We'll give it a shot but likely after Halloween. We've barely dipped into our film list and the binge watching of Ash vs. Evil Dead already put a dent in our plans.

You could say the same thing about Star Wars or Raiders Of The Lost Ark...sometimes familiarity does not breed contempt. Now, all those crummy SW and Indy ripoffs that flooded theaters in the late 70's and throughout the 80's...those were like a Xerox of a Xerox, only with no genuine passion behind them, just bandwagon-jumping greed. It's like people who endlessly brand Brian De Palma as nothing more than a sleazy Hitchcock imitator, never giving him props for keeping Hitch's peerless suspense techniques and use of "pure cinema" alive in the era of anonymous genre trash (plus the prankish sense of humor most of his films possess that goes over the heads of most people). Hey, steal from the best, and all that.

It does look lovely.

I'm doing a Stranger Things theme this year for Halloween.

Here's some bullshit...supposedly the ST Blu-Ray set starts with FIVE MINUTES' WORTH of trailers for season two that you can't skip or even fast-forward through. :flip: Especially bad for anyone blind-buying the first season because of how good they've heard it is, only to get spoilers crammed down their throat.

This is why you rip blu-rays to a hard drive, and play only the specific content you desire.

Or just don't watch it and use the time to go fix something in the kitchen for the experience.

That does suck that you can't chapter skip to the content.

I don't think I've seen a disc that forced me to watch previews in over a decade. Thought they quit making them that way.

I mean, disabling the "chapter skip" or "top menu" button is one thing, but I can't think of a Blu I own that doesn't allow you to even FAST-FORWARD through any trailers at the beginning of the disc.

It's part of that 80's VHS experience. There was no "chapter skipping" in 1983. Immerse yourself in the experience, Monty.

Not sure how it was in the US, but in Holland, the trailers for other films were AFTER the film. In fact, the very first movie I bought in the US (Indiana Jones III) started with a freaking Pepsi commercial...blew my mind that you guys had ads on purchased movies.

Update: Someone on Blu-Ray.com found a work-around for the preview thing. Just insert the second disc, select "episodes 1-4", then eject and insert disc one and it'll go right to the menu.

Why bother, though? It's a Netflix series. Why wouldn't you just watch it on Netflix?

Because physical Blu-Ray copy trumps streaming every damn time.
