I'm surprised we didn't have a thread on this already.

I marathoned The Expanse over the last four or five days.

If you enjoy hard science fiction in outer space, I highly, highly recommend this show.

It's got the grit of BattleStar Galactica (reboot) but without aliens, robots, and that sort of thing. It's all just human beings living throughout our solar system (Earth, Mars, the asteroid belt, and some space stations).

It's got some Blade Runner going on, complete with a fedora-wearing detective roaming a grimy space station.

It's got solar system-spanning politics with various factions on the brink of war.

It has special effects that are worthy of a Hollywood film. I was seriously impressed.

It has a good story with a mystery that actually gets solved by the end of the first season, with an ongoing story that heads into the second.

It's "adult" insomuch as there is light profanity, not-quite-nudity, and a few moments of bloody violence, but it's not gratuitous in any way. No Game of Thrones level stuff here. It's more Breaking Bad levels of violence, with some "shits" scattered throughout and one scene with blurred out boobs.

The one weak spot is the cast, most of whom start out at barely likeable and not very well painted. However, they DO grow on you and you begin to like them by the end, when they've grown into a team.

Also, there is some sense of "no one is safe" here. Main characters DO die.

It's currently on Amazon Prime. Watch it.

I tried to watch one episode when it premiered. I fell asleep. I promised myself I would try again, but man this show had some boring characters...

I'm not sure this show will be your thing, to be honest.

The criticism IS on target for the first half of the season, though. They all start off pretty boring and are slow to reveal themselves.

The show is great, however, albeit not really Chris Knight material.

Sounds intriguing, I'll check it out.

The phrase out of all that that would sell it to most people is "not really Chris Knight material." They should put that in the ads.

FUCK! YOU!

/monty-mode

I'd totally watch anything that said "not Chris Knight material".

I watched The Expanse hype build-up for a year, and was super psyched to watch it. So when I fell asleep, I was super bummed that the show felt - to me - like a glorified fan-made Star Trek show (like that Axanar project that went nowhere), and had none of the "hard scifi" that I expected (and, to be clear, I love hard scifi).

Anyway, now that it's something I can binge, I might get through the first season and change my mind, who knows.

Probably not.

You're the second person in two days to recommend this to me. I don't have Amazon Prime though.
