Mountain Goats will be doing a few shows at a small venue in Chicago and it will be a two-piece band. I have tickets for two of the nights and I bet it will be fucking awesome.

I'm lowkey super hyped for the Fever Ray show. It's gonna be batshit crazy and filthy dirty.

Shit, I just sealed the deal to go to Chicago for Pitchfork Music Fest because (This is Not) This Heat is playing night 2 as well.

If you dig on the Electric Wizard/Stoner Metal, you might dig Yamantaka // Sonic Titan, though it can get super proggy at times.

Felix, you should skip that Residents shows. It turns out that scientists took a closer look and discovers that The Residents are bad. FYI!

I really wanted to fly out for the Residents show in Atlanta too because they always bring Molly Harvey up to do a song, but sadly I couldn't make that happen.

Godspeed you! Black Emperor at First Avenue.

Two openers, neither that I was into. One just made a long drone session.

I hate shows at First Ave. because it's standing room only, and you need to get there early to find a decent spot. By the time the main act gets on stage, I've been standing for about 3 hours. I am old. I am grumpy.

I sit down while in line when I show up early, and I sit down at the barrier before the opening acts start up and I lean on the barrier for the rest of the show. I find it's the only way to do it and still preserve my body the day (if not days) after.

Also being really high on a lot of stimulants helps.

I parked myself at a barrier to lean on. No sitting though. Good advice.

So my wife really wanted to see Journey, Def Leppard, and Cheap Trick at Fenway Park this summer. Our friends said they'd go with her (since I refused). They asked me to look into tickets. Cheapest tickets (obstructed view) $40 with $25 per ticket fee. Next level is $75 + $30 fee, and the next is $110 with a $37.50 fee per ticket. WHAT THE FUCK? Needless to say, they are not going, but $37.50 a ticket in FEES? Fuck you!

Yeah, I'd skip that one also even though I'm a HUGE Cheap Trick fan. I just wish they'd do a headlining tour. They are coming through here on a double bill with... wait for it... fucking Poison! WTF? I'll be in Japan when they play here, so it's not even remotely a temptation, but I haven't seen them live in a decade and really want to before they stop playing.

Last year, they came through and played the Greek Theater up in L.A. They opened for Foreigner (who not only sucks but also only has one original member). Again, what. the. fuck?

But seriously, I wouldn't pay to see Journey or Def Leppard at this point. At least the latter has mostly original members but they're still a shadow of the band that put out High n' Dry (one of the best mainstream rock albums of the 1980's).

Ween in Colorado is unfortunately out but has been replaced with flying to San Francisco to see The Residents three more times for a total of five on this tour. 8-)

Dean Ween Group is playing 3/29 at a club just down the street from me that holds just under 500 people. Just sayin'.

I'm waiting for the west coast shows so I can do Portland and Seattle. You should definitely go to that show, though! Deaner puts on a great show full off deep cuts that don't get a lot of play in the full band (though the touring band is just everyone minus Gene).

Also: two nights of Ween in Portland were confirmed and I'm hyyyyyyyyyyyyyyypeddddddd!

I saw Cheap Trick in 1993 or 1994. They were great and really won me over.

Saw Poison in ... '89, I think? Maybe 1990. At the time I enjoyed hair metal, so yes, I loved the show.

I would not pay to see either (nor Journey [UGH!] or Def Leppard) now.

Maybe Cheap Trick for $10 or $20 at a small venue, but that's about it.

Saw the Decemberists the other night at the St. Paul Palace Theater - one of the better venues around here. I haven't really been into the Decemberists since 2007 or 2008. It was ok. They haven't changed. I've changed.

The radio station around here recorded the whole thing and put it on youtube, that's kind of neat. I'm the sort of person that bootlegs shows, so it was nice of them to do the work for me.

I just saw this response, Shoe. I saw Poison on a metal showcase thing that happened out here about ten years ago. They headlined and a bunch of other bands like Cinderella and L.A. Guns played. Poison played a full set and had all the pyro, lights, etc. It was fun for what it was but having seen that once was enough. I was just never a big enough fan to warrant seeing them more than that.

Listening to a few Cheap Trick boots from the last couple of years, I'd say they're actually tighter now than they were when I saw them ten years ago. That's why I'd like to see them at this stage. That and the fact that they still incorporate deep cuts in their sets. I read a story about how Eddie Trunk (a real blowhard metal DJ) was backstage with them about six years ago. Rick Nielson told him that they could literally play any song from any album if asked. He challenged them to let him write the set list and they accepted. He wrote the list, they all agreed on it and walked out and played it. He put some seriously obscure tracks on there but they knew them. Then, they played an extended encore with all the hits fans wanted to hear so no one went home feeling ripped off.

I'd love to see them pull out "Reach Out" from the Heavy Metal soundtrack or "Invaders of the Heart" from Next Position Please.

That is a VERY cool story. Seriously impressive that after all these years they can still rip out any song they've done. That's pretty rare.

I'm reminded of some years back, U2 pulls a fan on stage and gave him an acoustic guitar. Unprompted, he starts playing "A Sort of Homecoming," the opener from The Unforgettable Fire. The band can't play it. It's been too long. Bono can't remember the words. They fumbled their way through a verse or so, it was a good moment, but just went to show that they hadn't rehearsed it in years.

I still fumble over the chords of some of my own songs, and I'm just one dude with a limited number of really easy songs. For a whole BAND to be able to nail anything you throw at them, with so many tunes at their disposal, kind of kicks ass.

The first episode annoyed me. The second started to suck me in. Now, I'm actually annoyed when they finally talk about the band.

See, I appreciate when they start talking about the band U2 because where else am I going to get the important facts, such what the band members' names are and what instruments they play?

These are the things I need to know.

Shoe if you can't get behind U Talkin' U2 to Me?, you should at least give their new podcast R U Talkin' R.E.M. RE: Me? a shot.

Bon Iver did some show with a dance group in St. Paul. They didn't play any of their album songs. And it was fucking awesome. It was a good break from all the shows that have been boring.

Wish I could find audio and video from the shows here, but found some from one of their trial runs on it.

For real, if you're at all into Bon Iver and they take the Tu Dance show near you, go. One of the better shows I've been to. And they didn't play a single song they're known for!

HOLY FUCKING HELL, MAN, go see David Byrne if you can. That was straight-up the greatest thing I've ever seen, concert or otherwise.

Saw the Mountain Goats two nights in a row, in a stripped down version with only two-band members. Both nights were at a folk music school in Chicago.

Seeing them live is tricky, because while I've likely heard most of their songs, with probably 400+ songs under their belt, there's a good chance I'll either not know or care for a good chunk of the setlist.

Night one had a nice balance, but night two was a lot of slow songs off albums I haven't listened to more than once or twice, so it was a bit of a slog. Still, the banter is one of the highlights, and maybe I'll give some of those albums another listen.

I really like Mountain Goats, but I doubt I'd ever see them for that exact reason. Odd as it sounds, the catalog is just too big, and since the band has no hits and only a handful of "fan favorites," it's way too easy to go to a show and be only barely familiar with 95% of what they play.

I have almost all their stuff, but keep returning to the same three or four records. I bet at any given show you only hear three or so songs at most from those records.

That's okay for bands that rely on a cool sound or who improv or whatever, but a small folk act is all ABOUT the songs.

Yup. Same here.

I go to All Hail West Texas, Tallahassee, Sunset Tree, their recent Goths album, and sometimes put their old singles on.

But fuck you, John Darnielle wants to play 4 songs off the bible album, deal with it.
