I came up with this topic just a few minutes ago when I reshuffled my iPod, and the first track was Bring the Noise by The Unholy Trio. (video is slightly NSFW).

Another favorite is Green haze by Elvis Hitler music to Purple Haze w/lyrics to Green Acres.

Anyone have any other ones?

But aren't all covers except the most slavishly respectful of the originals, ironic?

and come on, that Bring the Noise is some funny fucking shit!

I don't even have speakers on this computer at work, but I am here to tell you that "funny" ironic covers are never, ever funny, there are no exceptions.

I love unusual covers.

I did not love this.

The Elvis Hitler is an old favorite.

This is also an old favorite, quite similar:

I'm a big fan of Soft Pink Truth's second album, Do You Want New Wave or Do You Want the Soft Pink Truth?. It's a series of punk/hardcore covers re-done by one (or maybe both) of the guys from Matmos. I Owe it to the Girls is probably my favorite.

I also enjoyed most of Nadja's covers album. They usually do drone metal (and have TONS for releases of varying quality). They did Swans, Slayer, Eliot Smith, MBV and a couple others. I'm a big fan of their Dead Skin Mask. It's longer and sludgier than the original.

There's a Richard Cheese cover of "Gin and Juice" that I like. That's ironic.

Weird to hear "Too Drunk to Fuck" done sexily.

You just reminded me of the greatest ironic cover of all time, bar none:

That would be interesting to hear.

white guys covering rap songs on acoustic instruments ironically might be the worst thing in the world.

Are you a fan of the original? See I'm not, which is probably why I enjoy this cover. Dancehall reggae artist Shinehead also uses the lyrics from Bring the Noise in his song Gimme No Crack.

That reminds me, did I ever bother asking Monty his opinion on Fantomas' theme song cover album over on DIMP?

Should I just post a new topic dedicated to the subject, since he'll never read this? Can he resist Slayer + Badalamenti?

Public Enemy is one of my all-time favorites, It Takes A Nation... is one of the best albums of all time, and I have a loose family connection with Professor Griff. I LOVE the original.

It's not a matter if butchering the original, though. I don't mind that sort of thing at all. That can often be awesome. I just didn't happen to enjoy this one is all.

Four words for you, and they involve color, temperature, and a variety of the fruit of the plants from the genus Capsicum.

I also have two great records of all covers. First is Killdozer For the Ladies, which features such classics as American Pie, One Tin Soldier, and Take the Money and Run, amongst others. The second is The Coolies Dig? which is all Simon & Garfunkel covers except for Having My baby.

That Van Halen cover is great. It also made me notice the similarity between the riff in "Jump" and the riff in "Sweet Jane."

This isn't necessarily true. It would be for a lot of intentionally funny covers, but there are times when the covering artist sees an idea in the original and brings it to the foreground. This isn't necessarily for irony's sake, but a different reading of the material. Coil does really well with re-contextualizing songs with cover versions.

Take this sitcom theme.

or their version of Tainted Love (also using Marc Almond)

The first one is so "re-contextualized" as to be an original piece. Tainted Love not as much, as it is easy to hear the originals melody, the song would be recognizable without the vocals.

What about something like Start by The Jam? It's not a cover of Taxman by The Beatles, but George certainly would have won if he'd sued. Of course George would be the last guy on earth to sue for that.

Taxman

Start

Here's a couple of cover versions that I find funny/interesting......

Rammstein - Das Model (Original: Kraftverk)

Rammstein - Stripped (Original: Depeche Mode)

I am not really into hard music at all, but I enjoy Rammstein tremendously .....

I like Nina Gordon's version of Straight Out Of Compton.

The metal version of Amazing horse is funny, but not as good as the original:

Fun fact: I group Residents fans into categories that include fans and just straight-up autistic motherfuckers and the dividing line is The King and Eye (the all Elvis cover album), which is the worst thing they've ever put out, so bad I've never been able to listen to it in its entirety.

If you're willing to defend The King and Eye, I will not talk to you because you are fucking crazy.
