You know, Laser Pink Floyd and that sort of shit?

I was checking out the schedule for my local planetarium to see if there was anything coming up I wanted to see and notice they're doing music programs, too. Next weekend is Laser Dark Side of the Moon and Laser The Wall, for instance. They're previously done Zeppelin, Metallica, etc.

How are these shows? Kind of cool? It's only $10, so it's not like it would be a big loss either way, just curious.

Unfortunately, almost all the astronomy stuff is geared towards kids. Only one show for adults/all ages for the rest of the month, and it's at an inconvenient time.

If you've never seen a show, then yeah, check it out. "Laser" show technology is incredibly dated in 2015, so it could just be an umbrella term for an image projection experience. If it's just lasers, then the only way you'll enjoy it is with the help of some mind-altering substance. If you don't bring any with you, I'm sure 90 percent of the audience can help you out.

They really don't convey the subtlety, grace and quiet charm of Williams' compositions, do they?

It won't be as awesome as it seemed in the 80's or 90's, because as Chris said, it is very dated, but with the assistance of mind altering whatever you have it could still be enjoyable.

The last time I went to a planetarium laser show was in the early 90's and I was very altered, and it was awesome. I believe it was titled Laser '69, and I somewhat remember Buffalo Springfield changing my life.

If the only way to enjoy it is to get high first, I'll take a pass.

You can enjoy it without being high, but you won't enjoy it as much.

I'm the best.

Seriously, though, if the ONLY way something would be enjoyable is to get into an altered state first, then that thing is not truly enjoyable. Altered states can sometimes enhance, perhaps, but that's a bonus. It shouldn't be the whole thing.

That's speaking only for myself. Your mileage may vary.

And it's cool if it does.

The very nature of the situation makes it geared towards hyper-focused coolness. Sitting in a seat, starring up a wall of projected dancing imagines that go along to psychedelic music. They are usually not trying to lay any narrative on the music, just make cool looking things that go along to it. So, it is kind of, if not 100%, geared towards that mind altered experience.

Having said that...

If you really like the music anyway, than it can be very enjoyable without the drugs too.

True enough. I have gone sober and high on a variety of substances.

I prefer the substance experiences.

And actually, it was usually the show that enhanced the substances, not the other way around.

Kind of like having a beer and eating a pizza. Pizza with beer is fantastic. I'll still eat pizza without a beer. But I prefer a beer with my pizza.

Exactly! I'm not interested in "doing ABC will make this activity better," but "doing this activity makes doing ABC better" is cool, if that makes any sense.

You have to think of it this way, Pender gets high.

Pender recommends getting high as often as possible.

Everything, to Pender, is better when you're high - including laser shows.

Pender don't get high as often as he used to.

Pender must work and work and work.

Some days, Pender still gets high and he recommends it highly.

Thus, if you haven't been and don't want to get high, you shouldn't ask Pender if something is better high - because everything is better getting high, for Pender.

Understand?

Look at the floor. If it looks like a floor to you, you need drugs to enjoy laser shows. If you see a landscape of interesting patterns, potential pitfalls and adventures - then, drugs are not even remotely necessary. It's all about stimulation, and most adults have killed their inner child blocked their imagination from filling in the blanks. With laser shows, there are a lot of blanks.

John Williams is dead? And hates lasers?

My local planetarium is doing the old cliche, Laser Pink Floyd, this Saturday, with full Dark Side and Wall.

I really want to smoke up and go, but I'll be out of town. Dammit!

I've never been to one of these shows, but would love to go. I'm sure that smoking up beforehand would be a prerequisite.

Also, I can definitively say that Friday night's dance recital was much more enjoyable than usual thanks to some totally legal edibles.
