I remembered reading a few odd issues of this run in the 80s, and having a general idea of what was going on without getting the whole story. Always liked Simonson's style, though (I read X-Factor religiously back then), and I certainly like the art in the earlier issues of this run, when he was drawing and writing, better than the later ones where Sal Buscema did the art. Fun to revisit and read the issues I missed when they were new (which were the majority of them--the X-Men books were where I spent the majority of my comics money, and Thor only got picked up when I had extra cash, which was pretty rarely).

They've been on my nightstand for two or three years now, unfinished.

I did love them back in the day, though.

If you've never read any of Sarah Vowell's books, you should. She's informative, and hilarious. All are non-fiction, most on a single subject. This one is a collection of assorted essays.

Reread this after watching the first season of Hap and Leonard. The TV show is a pretty damn good adaptation.

A fitting end to King's Bill Hodges trilogy.

Stalled for a while reading Tom Jones and plowed through this:

Not re-colored reprints, though. Scanned originals.

In the style of (most of) the art and the writing, it reminded me of Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen without all the literary trappings. Same sense of a superhero team traipsing through a conspiracy nut's subconscious. Same detailed but stiff art style.

Fun, if you like that sort of thing.

Working my way through most of these runs of Captain America. I like the character, moreso in the last few years since the movies came out, but these weren't on my radar when I was a kid.

The whole deal where he gives up being Captain America, I thought was longer. I'd somehow gotten the impression it went on for a year or two, not a few issues. The Kirby stuff is absolutely insane, a throwback to the 60s style (and lopsided, I thought--I enjoyed the last few issues with Arnim Zola more than the earlier ones in his run). I'm in the middle of the Stern/Byrne run now, and enjoying that a lot. This is about the mix of self-seriousness and unreality that I remember from comics when I was a kid, and no matter how much of a dick he is, John Byrne used to be able to draw.

How is this? I like both his father and his brother's writing but I've read the description on the dust jacket for this one and it did nothing for me.

It was enjoyable, but kind of petered out towards the end. If you're into the behind-the-scenes aspects of filmmaking, you'll probably find it more enriching. I didn't detect much of his Old Man or brother's voice in it.
