Not just cosmetic. It's under the hood, too: 64 bit now, running on the tweaked Fallout 4 engine.

For all practical purposes it's just cosmetic, yes, but for people who mod and such it's much deeper than that.

Just like Skyrim, I'm waiting for the PS4 upgrades to hit $40 and then I'm buying the shit out of them.

Console versions don't get discounts if you own the original edition?

Nope. They are full-priced games.

Keep in mind, Skyrim never came out for the current gen consoles. This is the first release for them, and the remasters are not coming out for last gen consoles. It would be tough to create a mechanism to give that discount (though no doubt it's possible).

Finished Baldur's Gate, kind of stalled out on the new expansion, Siege of Dragonspear. It's very good, I'm just burned out for the moment on this kind of gaming.

I've moved on to retro stuff. Installed LaunchBox and got a bunch of my ROMs and emulators loaded into it. Enjoy some 2600 gaming last night.

I highly recommend LaunchBox for those who like to have all their stuff organized and easy to navigate. Automatically downloads cover art and game descriptions, sorts your games by system, launches the appropriate emulator when it comes time to play. It's good stuff.

One of my favorite games. Potentially lands on an all-time list for me.

If you enjoy it, I highly, highly recommend getting Enemy Within. It expands the game greatly with loads of new elements that fit seamlessly into the game.

Picked up a used copy of Civilizaton Revolutions for PS3 yesterday. Started playing last night in tutorial mode. So far, the world is at peace.

I've been juggling a few games, but for the moment I am HOOKED AS FUCK on Stardew Valley.

Holy shit, believe the hype.

This game is addictive as hell. It sounds super boring when you describe it -- it's an old school style kind of farming simulator / RPG hybrid with freeform gameplay and open goals -- but man oh man, once you get past the first hour and get a sense for what you're supposed to be doing, it really sinks its teeth into you.

I've think I've put 20 hours into it since Christmas Eve.

I'm only 15 or so hours into it and I hear it really gets linear in the back end, but I really appreciate the open world road trip vibe where it's all low-stakes, you're hanging out with your friends cooking and driving around (for up to 10 minutes in real fucking time) doing nothing in particular.

I have absolutely no idea how I'm going to feel about it by the endgame, but I'm kicking back and enjoying.

I have been thinking about FFXV for a while. Especially if the rumors of a MMORPG DLC is in the works.

But, I am also looking forward to this launch in Q2 (hopefully we're not all nuclear cinders by then - or maybe, hopefully we are?)

The back end of the game is complete and utter fucking nonsense, clearly the result of spending 10 years in development and not knowing what they wanted to do with the game - there's even a solid 2+ hour chunk where it removes all of your weapons and turns into hide-and-seek Survival Horror game. There's product placement in the form of Cup O Noodles, there's quests involving Cup O Noodles and it gets mentioned repeatedly and makes me laugh every single fucking time, and for some reason Vivienne Westwood's there, too?

Absolutely well worth your time.

Elite Dangerous is pretty, but it should have been called Euro Truck Simulator In Space. They've added a few new things here and there (like aliens, recently), but if you don't like grinding and watching the same space scape out of your window for hours on end, then you should look at Rebel Galaxy. I bought this for $6 and change, and it's more fun than Elite. Still grindy, but things happen more often. You spend more time interacting with NPCs and accomplishing things (like upgrades). There's something to said about the hypnotic (endless) traveling sequences in ED, but I don't have the patience.

If you bail on your console, and can't wait for Star Citizen, there's a cool FPS/space sim game on Steam called Angels Fall First:

Very cool, CK. I will check out Rebel Galaxy tonight.

I don't think my laptop is all that for running PC games, but I should start checking it for capability.

Zelda, Breath of the Wild.

This is the first "new" Zelda game I've played since Windwaker. I have nostalgia for the IP, but the formula was pretty stale when I left it. Get sticks, light torches, doors open. Shoot arrow into eyeball, doors open.

The new game probably has those mechanics too, but I haven't run into them and I'm sure I've clocked in like 5 or 6 hours in by now. It's a nice open world game in the Zelda universe. I don't think there's anything revolutionary going on with this title, but it's nice to revist the franchise and have it feel fresh.

I always hate when you plan on picking up a game that is part of a series and people always have to comment:

Dude, you should pick up the first 17 parts and play them through before you play that one! They are sooooooooo much better than the one you got! Everything is so much better and you are a scrub for even getting into this before blah blah blah. And you should play through the others because your characters gets oh so much more from having done the earlier ones before.

Etc., etc., etc.....

Like, fucking SIGH

Yes, I know I should play the other games that you played over the last 15 years - but, you know what? I am not fucking going to do that. Fuck trying to play catch up on YEARS of previous game shit.

Anyone else frustrated by this attitude that is tossed at people starting from a later game edition? Or, am I the only old man out there yelling at people on their lawn?

8-)

Pole Position II plays just fine without ever needing to know the plot or lore of the original entry.

Yeah, I've gotten that before. I've been on the other side of it too but try not to rub it in (or actually even mention it most times).

What game are you starting?

Magic Eight Ball guesses that Pender is playing the wrong Mass Effect.

I haven't really experienced that. It sounds annoying.

I started with ME3 and I started with God Of War III.

I also start with Fallout 4.

I don't get the mentality because the games are a product of their time. Like, I can go back and enjoy Morrowind, but if you want to start an Elder Scrolls game, just go play Skyrim. Morrowind is pretty dated.

It doesn't matter with any of them but Mass Effect, which is genuinely the third part in an overarching story in which you import your saves (and all the decisions) from one game to the next, so the shit you do in game 1 has a (slight) impact on game 3.

Though even then it will play just fine.

The other stuff? Whatever. You never need to start at the "start," so to speak.

Mass Effect is kind of a special case, though, because it was designed from the ground up to be an interconnected trilogy with a beginning, middle and end.

I was upset with Oblivion because it took out my mega jumping and levitation powers that were present in Morrowind.

Resident Evil 7 on PC.

Creepy. It's like playing the original as a young and jumpy teen at 12AM all over again.

PS everyone raving about the new Zelda game? It's pretty alright though I don't think it's a 10/10 game. Neat diversion from what they've been for the past 20 years but not much stood out for me. People praising the puzzles have me scratching my head - there were a few that had me, but overall they seemed simple. Maybe I didn't stumble across the harder ones.

Just pulled this back out after Nick saw some terraforming game (surface topography) and this was the closest we had.
