Here Shall Be Dragons

Got my 5th edition PHB (Player's Handbook) on release day and although many of the core rules were already available online for free, the book expanded those initial ideas very well.

I have already started fleshing out a campaign in my head and look forward to the next few months as the other two books arrive (Monster Manual and the Dungeon Master's Guide).

So what's the dilly with this? Still rooted in the d20 system?

Is this the sort of 1st -> 2nd, or 2nd -> 2.5 progression, or is it more like 2.5 -> 3?

The last time I played D&D, it was called "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons." And there were, like, 50 hardcover books.

It is more like,

[All Previous Editions]-Crap = [Original D&D]+Fun

5th Edition still has a d20, yes.

But gone are many of the arbitrary charts and algorithms that dominated the editions starting with AD&D back in the late 1970s, all to be replaced by simple (but effective) concepts of performing actions with an advantage, a disadvantage, or at a base value.

Much of the emphasis on role-playing a character is back, but the system also offers the savvy Dungeon Master (read as "yours truly, me") enough sophistication and options that a DM's table will be able to enjoy many nights of fun adventures filled with challenges unexpected and rewards undreamed of.

I look forward to building my campaign with this new design.

Sounds quite promising.

I liked the evolution into d20 because it had less reliance on dozens of charts, none of which were consistent with one another. It meant that as a DM I could concentrate more on providing a great adventure rather than as merely the Keeper Of The Charts & Numbers, And Arbiter Of The Rules.

Still, some people thought the character builds were way too busy with stats and skills. I don't disagree with that.

Stats and skills are simplified, but not emaciated.

Want to juggle small kittens while dancing a jig?

Roll a Dexterity Check with Disadvantage - oh, you're a former circus performer? Alright, you have Advantage.

Roll two d20s and take the higher roll as your result.

That is about as complicated as it can get.

Feats can add some complexity, but only for those that want it since they are strictly optional. I like them, so I will be using them.

Also, they are definitely not your 3rd edition or 3.5 edition Feats.

But skills are nigh nonexistent.

Playing a character is fairly simple, but not cookie-cutter like 4th edition was. Where 4th edition really hammered a Player's round concept into their square character build holes, this edition allows the flexibility of all other editions (e.g., if you really want a wizard that wears plate armor, you can do that, or maybe you feel a barbarian using daggers is cool - well, do that, too).

Don't get me wrong, though, when you build a wizard you still have schools of magic to choose from and clerics still have gods to choose their powers from and rangers still choose the arrow-firing guy or the melee whomping fucker.

So, some of the classic D&D tastes are there - but they do not discourage adding your own spices that will definitely change the color of your ranger vs another ranger.

I encourage reading the free online PDF player's booklet for a glimpse, but the real diversity comes through with the actual PHB.

I will post more from that as time goes on.

He said there is some site that facilitates it all, gives you all the tools and rules as part of the package to streamline running campaigns online. I may need to check it out.

I'm glad to see that like his old man, he's DMing. :thumbs:

Definitely a good skill.

I want to get back into running a campaign, too.

I had thought (incorrectly) that I would be done with all my personal crap a few weeks ago and I ran into a stone wall of reality. Now I am doing the slow drudge of finishing everything, but I do look forward to the days and weeks where I won't be dreading an encounter or necessary conversation - at that point, my mind will be free enough to run a good game.
