If you're my friend on Facebook you see regular posts from my blog but some of you here may have missed it. I've started a new series that's focused on the influences behind some truly iconic horror and suspense films.

The first one posted yesterday and it's about the movie Freaks and Tod Browning's past in the carnival sideshow.

A new one will post every Thursday for the next 2 - 3 months. In the next few weeks posts will be about Fritz Lang's M, Hitchcock's Rear Window and JAWS.

This is great stuff, Cary. Really looking forward to seeing where you go with this.

And I'm glad you posted it here, since I don't check Facebook anymore, except to once in a while check for PMs.

Never knew any of that about Browning even though I am familiar with Freaks.

I would definitely like to hear more about how or why it ruined Browning. Was it just because it had "freaks" in it? General hysteria over the subject or a specific instance of BTS conflict between Browning and the powers that be?

I also like that it says you posted this blog entry at 4am.

My blog entries are written about a month in advance and programmed to go live at 4:00 a.m. PST because that's 7:00 a.m. on the East Coast. You can bet money that I'm not up writing and posting at 4:00 a.m.

Freaks came along at the wrong time and that's really what ruined Browning. If he'd been allowed to make the move prior to Dracula, he'd have probably been fine as far as Hollywood was concerned. What happened was there was a movement to rein in subject matter at the studios and a call for more wholesome fare. That wave was getting close to cresting when Freaks came out. People held the film up as an example of how morally bankrupt the film industry was and portrayed the actors as being victims who didn't know what they'd signed up for. Add the sensational approach of the marketing that I mentioned in the article and the film companies were on the hotseat. So they pulled the film from theaters, pulled all advertising and then used Browning as the scapegoat. After that, no studio wanted to work with him.

I kind of got that from the article, but wanted to make sure.

That summary helped. Thank you.

I am a little disappointed that my imagined Cary, inebriated and bleary, a tortured Hemingway-esque fixture against the predawn's light at 4am hitting ENTER on his keyboard and then sitting back to watch the ocean waves on the beach, was wrong.

But I definitely enjoyed the information.

:)

Your post about your struggles with design and creativity ruined my image of you also. I pictured you as this DM in robes, a couple of dice in one hand and a magical pen in the other that practically drew pictures by itself. Now I picture you the same only the pen isn't magic.

Never meet your heroes, they say.

To them, I say, "Cary is every bit as much a heroic Hemingway-esque guy. But at any hour. Not just 4am."
