Cool post. Glad you enjoyed the Nightmare Haunted House. I love that ride and generally insist we ride it more than once when we go despite the groans and/or eye-rolling the second or third time around. There's just so much to see that it's hard to pick it all out on one trip through.

Were the crowds bad? It doesn't sound like it with all you rode.

Also, glad you liked the tar pits and the observatory. Did you go in the museum at Griffith or just walk around the grounds?

The crowds were bigger than I expected, but not too bad on anything. We waited about 20-25 minutes for the Matterhorn, and 30-40 minutes for the Toy Story ride in California Adventures (very cool, though, and a ton of fun). Everything else had an under 20 minute wait. The museum and observatory were both closed since it was Monday, but we walked around the grounds, then stopped lower on the mountain to check out a little of the hiking trails. K was into riding the mansion the second time, but gave me a look when I insisted on a third trip. We were super disappointed that Pirates wasn't open, though, as the CA Pirates is way better than the FL one.

At Disney? Sadly we didn't get to that one there. But the La Brea tar pits totally lived up to it's billing, especially since I've wanted to go there for most of my life.

Loved it. Karen also loved the baguette delivery system. She's ready to move.

Great post! I loved the fact that K was happy about seeing the turtle actually poop. My K would have fixated on the same thing.

She was actually pissed at me for not A. taking a movie or picture of the turtle shitting and B. not taking a picture of the actual shit. Weird!

The final installment of the travel blog on Bonaire has now been posted. It normally doesn't take me this long, but my wife had to go to Orlando to care for her sick mom (and clean out her trailer), and was there for almost 5 weeks. I was out of sorts the whole time, but things are finally getting back to normal. I hope you all enjoy it.

I finally got to reading this. Those are GREAT shots of the octopus. You're right. They are a lot of fun to watch when they crawl across the reef. I love watching them change their color patterns as they move from place to place. Also loved the Italian live music conversation. Talk about high expectations!

You could tell she didn't really want to tell us what had happened at first, but she was so pissed at the guy for insisting on Italian music that she had to tell us.

I haven't attempted it yet, but I'm hoping to put together a longer video by editing all the short clips I have together. I have a good 2-3 minutes or more of cool octopus movement, including a squirt of ink!
I'm hoping the picture quality will improve in the future (I wasn't happy with very many of my pictures) as I just picked up an external flash for my underwater camera.

I just dropped a video to YouTube that I made of underwater shots from Bonaire. Check it out if you'd like.

My three favorite things:

1. Spotted Eagle Ray on the night snorkel (that was a spotted eagle ray, right?)
2. Schooling cuttlefish
3. Ink squirt!!

You got some good stuff there! Thanks for sharing.

Yes, that was a spotted eagle ray. I thought I had some daytime video of one, but I guess I just took stills of that one. The schooling cuttlefish, are actually schooling reef squid. I had to use the ink squirt as the final shot!

Everything is very "golden" at times. What is it about the location that gives it that hue?

It's actually due to the water and the light refraction through it. I had the camera set wrong which would account for some of it, but when taking movies there is only so much you can do to compensate for the color saturation. I'm hoping the new external flash I recently bought will help with color issues on the still photographs, but I don't want to invest more money on a separate film light which would take care of the color issues with the movies.

That's exactly the dilemma I run into. I don't want to spend more money on camera equipment because I'd rather use it for other gear. At the same time, I want something to document what I'm seeing so I can share it with the girls. Most of my pictures come out either too dark or with a weird hue to them. In Key West, everything was coming out green. The water was greenish so that was part of it, but even with my flash, it was too green.

One of the things I've started to ask myself is whether I have more fun when I dive with my camera or without. The obvious answer is "without" because I'm not focused on the camera. I may pick up a Hero3 before I go to Australia next year though. That way I can strap it to my mask, shoot video as I go and capture stills later. It's bound to be better than my ancient Sea and Sea camera even if it has color issues also.

New blog post on Casino Pier, Seaside Heights, NJ, which we visited about 2 months before it was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. I did get to meet Shoe on that trip, though!

It's getting close to book time for you. With a good editor and someone to lay things out so the presentation is right, you've got a nice niche travel book (or three!) on your hands.

Thanks for the kind words, Shoe. The wife thinks I could do something as well. My problem with the snorkeling material is that my pictures would never be good enough for a book. I do know a phenomenal Bonairean photographer, however.

I think the postcard book is more feasible, as the images are mostly public domain, and high quality. Either way, I wouldn't have the faintest idea how to go about even considering something like that.

One day, perhaps, we'll talk about this in detail. I'll help you out as much as I reasonably can. (I make no promises on how available I can be.)

The difficulty is, this is a highly visual idea that requires a lot of good layout and design, and no publishing option will result in a cheap book for consumers.

The good part is, it's a niche that will never go away, which means if you put a lot of work in up front, you could have a labor of love that pays you a small amount on a regular basis for many years to come.

Will there be a later pay-off to the ham and cheese sandwich references? I get the feeling it is foreshadowing.

I can't wait to get home and show these to my wife. I've been trying to get her excited about going to the UK for a while but she loves going to Asian countries instead. I thought your pictures were fantastic, way better than anything I took while in Bristol a couple of years ago.

Also, I give a big thumbs up to your choice of Fullers London Pride. That was a favorite of mine when I was in college. Amazingly, I never had one while in Bristol. I focused on all the ones I had never heard of before (many were local) and I still occasionally dream about a few of them.

Just reading that made me want to go back and listen to more Kate Bush. I'm very happy you got to see her and it sounds like an amazing trip!
