Three-race regatta today, fleet of 12. All fairly short races.

First race, we had a good start and a great first leg, were hovering at around 3rd coming into the mark. we looked good, tacked, and suddenly we're not going to make the mark. We thought we had played it conservative, but a wind shift pushed us into the mark, so we had to duck out and make our penalty turn. Fell from 3rd to last.

Managed to recover a bit and finished 6th.

Second race, we're pretty solid, right in the middle of the pack. Boats were densely packed and we were running fast on the downwind legs, so we felt good about our chances to gain some ground. Then, going into the second mark, some jackass pinned us us next to him. Boats all around, we couldn't move -- it was too chaotic for me to describe the situation without charts -- and the jackass's error forced us to miss the mark.

Once again, dropped to last. Once again, climbed back up and finished a respectable 5th.

Final race, we took a different approach at the start than the rest of the pack. They were all at one end of the line, we were at the other. Got off to a ROARING start and going into the first mark we were a couple hundred yards in the lead. No one was even close. Seeing as this was a short triangle course with moderate, steady winds, it was our race to lose.

But as we turn the mark, a committee boat approaches and says we started at the offset mark and were DQ'd. (Why they didn't say anything on the radio at the start, we have no idea.) Baffled and frustrated -- we're almost certain they were mistaken, we had that shit lined up perfect -- we dropped sail right there and cruised home.

So, fun day, but also one of frustrations.

That sucks.

If you then found that there wasn't any beer, that'd be a tragedy.

Then I have awful news for you.

My skipper had to leave for vacation immediately after, and I had work to do on my upcoming book, so we both bailed out on post-sailing beer, too.

Yeah.

The post-sailing beer is basically the whole point!

You've always got something to either celebrate or forget.

If you didn't drink afterward, I have no idea why you raced.

The great joy of sail days is that the skipper pays for the beer.

I'll sometimes bring a sixer just as a courtesy and will leave it behind on that boat, but yeah, with us the skipper always buys the beer. It's pitchers and a lunch spread at the one club, a cooler on the boat and full bar afterward at the other. When we do cross-club race, which is three times per summer, the clubs usually have free beer on tap.

In the unlikely event that I ever find myself on the Jersey Shore, I'd like to volunteer as crew.

I sense an ulterior motive.

It can't be an ulterior motive when I've straight-out told you it's all about free beer.

It's just a motive.

Hmmm.

I really can't quibble with that, I guess.

Really good races today. No wins, but we were very competitive.

First race, in the mix the whole time. Fleet of seven out there today. Rounding the final mark, the lead boat was fairly comfortable in first. We were in fourth but were having great runs downwind and boats 2 and 3 were only a few lengths ahead, so we felt confident we had a shot.

Sure enough, we caught the other boats. As we headed in for the finish, we were all neck and neck, no one more than a foot ahead or behind anyone else.

The line was a nightmare. Set way too narrow and flanked by committee boats that were right on top of us. All three of us were in a tight formation. You could have walked between all the boats. We're getting slapped by waves and tossed around. Lots of yelling from the center boat, as they couldn't go anywhere with other boats on either side and the line barely wide enough for all of us.

A literal photo finish. They got it on film and had to review it.

We thought we had slipped in for a third, maybe even a second, but they ruled us fourth, so no flag.

Disappointing, but fun. As long as you're in the mix, it's a good time.

Second race, we were strong all day. Went toe-to-toe with the guy who's consistently won the bay for two decades, him in the lead, us in second. Throughout this race, we stuck to a consistent tack. It was working for us. So did boat #3, on a completely different tack. For the first six of seven legs, they never gained on us. We had a comfortable hold on second the whole time.

Then on the final leg the wind shifted and coming into the final mark we ended up side-by-side. His gambit of going way out finally worked after failing the previous times.

From the final mark to the line is a cruise back into the club, basically a half-mile drag race. Our boats were a few feet from one another, and neither ever more than a foot ahead, for the whole time. Super tense.

They got inside us, though, and since the line involves making a slight move right, they slipped over the line a foot before us.

We got third. Disappointed to not hold second, but moments like that are always a lot of fun.

Then there was trashy hot girls back at the club to look at. That was nice. It's usually crusty old people.

I was under the impression that the Jersey shore was nothing but trashy hot girls.

With the "hot" being optional.
