If you all are looking for something to do in Anaheim on Saturday, Oct. 13, you should come on out to the Anaheim City Library for Indie Author Day. It's probably going to be less crowded than Disneyland, more fun than watching an Angels game and I know good bars nearby for the after party.

That's awesome Cary! I wish I could be there, but I'll be face down in the Caribbean looking at fish!

I love this!

I wish I could go to make sure you have a faux Misery incident for fun.

Very cool, man.

If you do an East Coast tour, I'll definitely check it out! :)

I really want to go, but I can't decide if I want to dress as a coyote or an ape thing.

I'm looking forward to it. I had another one I was supposed to do in early September but I had to cancel. I've got an offer from the Foothill Ranch library to speak to their book club. Apparently they want to read the book, discuss it and ask questions about it. That sounds like a lot of fun but looking at some of the books they've read recently, I've seen no horror. Mostly mysteries and romances. Could be a pretty quiet question and answer session overall.

Those are the best kind. I live for awkward silences.

If you do a reading session, it would be great to Skype it or something.

I would be willing to participate and do a Q&A session (questions from the interwebs).

We'll see. I heard back from them last night and they want me to come out on Nov. 1, but I'm not sure I can take off from work yet. I hope to be able to find out today.

This is awesome!

Enjoy yourself, dude.

I can tell you from experience to not expect much. You mostly sit at a table and look awkwardly at people, watch as they try to avoid eye contact or pretend to read your book jacket, and chat with the other authors.

And that's okay!!

You will ALSO chat with a few people who are genuinely interested in the book, will sell a couple of copies, and will have some good conversations with your fellow authors.

If you're doing a reading, pick a passage that ends on a cliffhanger, and read it at home a few times to really get a feel for how you'll present it. The more your reading is a 'performance' the better it will be and the more likely you'll be to suck people in.

Thanks Shoe. I expect that it'll be slow as you said, but I'm lucky in that some of my author friends were also asked to participate and we're at least sitting near enough to each other to chat and goof off to pass the time.

I will be reading and I've already picked out the passage I want to read. It ends on a cliffhanger, so no worries there. The book club reading thing is actually going to be more fun because they'll have already read my book. I'm looking forward to doing that one.

I just got back from the book club presentation and I have to say, that was one of the best times I've had in recent memory. Approximately twenty people, all women and all over 60 in age, sat and talked about my book and the horror genre in general for over an hour. It was supposed to be 45 minutes but the organizer just let it keep going. The best part, except for the organizer not a single one of them identified as liking horror going into reading The Wash.

I positioned the conversation initially as, "I feel that horror gets a bad rap sometimes and I believe that many people who enjoy mysteries would enjoy some horror fiction. They're honestly not that far apart." I gave a five minute talk about why I love the genre and what I think people misunderstand about it.

Then the doors blew wide open and the questions poured in. All but four of them had actually read it. Of those who did, the large majority liked it even if they found some scenes made them uncomfortable. I even ended up selling three books at the end to people who wanted them for relatives.

Again, this all for people who identified as not liking horror as a genre. It was a ton of fun and makes me wish I could do this more often.

Awesome, Cary, maybe you can organize one in Boston when you are up here?
