Anyone use one for watching UHD Blu-Rays? I'm going to upgrade my HT to 4K this Xmas, and I'm looking at 4K players for disc playback. The Xbox seems to be a real bargain, compared to every other player out there. I will never use it for gaming, and I just want a simple, non-intrusive UI for accessing and playing 4K discs - nothing else (that's what I have Plex for). Ideally, this player would last me 2 years, so I'm hesitant to take the console seriously (given the XBOX' quality control history).

People don't watch movies on this forum so no-one can tell you.

Though your Xbox quality control concern as spot-on. No idea if this generation of consoles has had as many problems.

Cheap at least!

You can get them new at that price, hence why I asked (and only because a lot of peeps have Xboxes). I think I'll grab this and a Sony player on Black Friday, and return the one I hate the least.

There have been no real problems with this gen of Xboxes.

(Even the major problems with the 360 gen was a specific run of them; the problems were sorted out with a slight redesign, but unfortunately the design with the problem was also the one that was out when it was selling at its peak.)

THAT SAID, I started to switch from the PS3 to Xbox One for playing blu-rays, and have opted to switch back and stick with the Playstation. The interface on the One is shitty and is not intuitive. I do not like the media player at all.

argh. I'm pretty sure every stand-alone player has a shitty UI, compared to Plex and Kodi. Not sure why these players (consoles included) can't include a phone app to control them.

Phone/tablet remote controls in Plex/Kodi are the best.

Damn. I don't "need" one until next autumn, when Shoe Jr leaves, but that's a good deal.

For me, it's a no go. Sony's 4K player is down to $149, and LG has one for $89 this week.

For a brief time today, there was an Xbox S with $25 gift card for $189. I was going to get it, sold out before I got to it.

:(

I don't need one either, thought it would make a good media player.

Just to follow up, some peeps on avsforum mentioned that - as a 4K disc player - the X-Box S is functional, but not very good. It's slow, has a clunky interface, and some discs don't play.

So, I went with the Sony X800, which seems to have more favourable reviews (although not perfect). Weird to be buying a dedicated disc player in 2017, but I don't feel like downloading 60+GB 4K rips just yet.

My preference would be PC playback, but apparently I need to meet some stupidly specific hardware requirement.

I don't even have a 4K display (aside from my 27" monitor) so it's not all that important. I'm just now upgrading my 720P projector to a 1080P model. At this rate, it will be 9 years before I have a 4k projector.

Why would I? That preview they posted looks worse than my laserdisc (yes, the samples do look nice (apart from the chromatic abberation), but whenever they show a visual effect shot, it's awful). Anyway, Disney will surely fuck them into another dimension if this ever gets released.

I have no doubt Disney will re-release the special editions in 4K, now that they own the rights to the 1977 film. I can wait. Until then, the blu-ray rips will do. I just blink when Greedo shoots. And try to ignore the three crappy changes to Empire (which, to be honest, is the only early Star Wars movie I watch frequently).

goddammit, okay, if these nerds release Empire in 4K, I will throw money at them.

Because watching grainy film rips on a projector is really awesome. Like, midnight-movie awesome.
