So I'm too inept to have it look all nice and shit, but I just did an ookla speed test on my phone. I got 30.94 download and 6.49 upload. Ping was 39.

Yeah I get significantly faster speeds on my 4G then I do on DSL. When I had unlimited data I was considering just paying for hotspot and ditching the DSL but when I upgraded to the Samsung Note 2, Verizon changed my plan to shared with only 4Gb of data for more per month.

What's the point of a faster connection than, say, 2 Mb/s?

Are you guys downloading 20 simultaneous HD torrents?

You need at least 4Mbit for Netflix's high quality HD stream. You are possibly confusing bits and bytes (lower case b = bits, upper case B = bytes). Divide by 8, and you get the actual megabytes per second. So, a 20Mbit download speed nets you 2.5 megabytes per second. Given that, a 4GB HD torrent would take:

26 minutes to download at 20Mbit.
4.4 hours to download at 2Mbit.

Why does everyone in the US use bits to measure speed? The larger number sounds faster. Necessary, since this country offers much slower connection speeds, compared to the rest of the developed world. And, as Techie has discovered, more and more people will have to choose between slow and useless connections, or fast and (intentionally) crippled ones.

Yeah, with less than 6 downloaded HD movies a day, life would truly suck.

Because the internet is only used for downloading HD movies.

No, but everything else takes way less bandwith. Unless of course, you're an aoloffline-league UPloader.

Ah fuck it, I don't know what I'm talking about. Just fucking for fucks sake...

The throughput is usually only about 1/2 your rated speed max, the other half is secretly openly used by the NSA and Google.

On our connection we have three phones, three computers, 2 PS3's, Western Digital Live TV, three DirectTV boxes (all internet connected) and one bluray player. Sure, not all on at the same time but two on at any one time brings out connection to it's knees.

My year with Comcast is up and they've raised my rates on me so I called them today. They offered to give me twice the number of channels, the X1 DVR service, and raise my Internet speed from 20 Mbps to 105 Mbps for less than what I'm paying now. Cool. I'll post a speed test when I get my upgrade installed.

Nice. I'm supposed to be at 105 Mbps, but even if it's really only 50, I'm happy.

Our download speed is around 15 mbps with upload at 1-2. Lately everybody in my home is always watching netflix which means I cannot play any multiplayer games because my ping is way too high. I have a Belkin Router and I just setup something called Intellistream; it's supposed to help from what I could tell but I don't really know. I'm not sure what else I need to do to fix this problem. Do I call and get the mbps upgraded to around 30 instead of 15 or is there a way I can limit these devices from making me lag so much?

Call your ISP and bitch about your problem. Your u/l speeds are great for someone living in 2003.

Alternatively, you should wipe the router's software, and replace it with DD-WRT. I'm not going to show you how to do it, because if you fuck it up, you'll brick your router. Google DD-WRT, and see if it's something you're even remotely interested in. I've been using it for many years, and it's fixed every single issue I ever had with any kind of connection error (especially with torrenting). The software simply replaces whatever came with your router (regardless of brand), and allows you to do things the manufacturer never intended the device to do.

I'll look into that after I call and bitch tomorrow. It's not usually this bad even with netflix but the past 2 months have just been horrible. I'm moving in a few months and I will never again use Suddenlink, the worst ISP I've ever had to use.

Still not getting anywhere near the 105 Mbps I'm supposed to be getting, but still not complaining.

This is weird. Those numbers aren't matching what it shows on the Speedtest site.
