So, I have DSL, mainly because putting cable in the room with the computer would be a clusterfuck. It usually works great, but for the past 2 days, it kicks off randomly, and I have to reboot it. Also, I have a ton of static on my land line. Is it the router that's shit the bed? The cables look fine, and have never given me issue before.

Do you have DSL filters on all the other phone lines in the house?

Also, if you go wireless, it doesn't matter where the modem/router is in your house. Switching to cable will make you realize how much DSL sucks so much (especially if you have RCN cable in Boston, which caches Netflix data (no buffering)).

I have DSL filters on the other lines. What would I need to go wireless through cable. We have Comcast in the area (no real competition), so could get it through them.

Before committing to cable, find some reviews from people living in your immediate area (since speed varies by location).
All you need is a wireless adapter and your existing router (which I assume allows for wireless access - if not, a replacement costs $50-100), which is available as either a USB plug ($15-20), or an internal PCI card($15-50). If you have a laptop made in the last decade, you're already set.

I had 1.5MB DSL, then switched to 5Mb cable in 2005. Currently at 30Mbit, and can upgrade to 65Mbit (tempting, but I'd have to convince the wife to drop cable TV to adjust for the price increase).

Comcast has an internet modem/router that is also a wireless router and comes with the service. It's what I've been using for the last year or so. We watch Netflix upstairs through the wireless connection, router is downstairs, and it is very smooth and fast.

If they don't offer that in your area, I have a wireless N dual channel router (Cisco-Linksys WRT610N) you can have for very cheap.

But, like Chris says, check with people in the immediate area, as speeds do very greatly.

Well it stayed on for most of yesterday, but shit the bed at the end of the night. I'll need to call Comcast and see if they hook me up wirelessly. How far away from my immediate area do I have to check to see how the speeds are?

The closer the better, but simply people in the town should be good enough.

Cable is shared speed more then DSL is, but cable has much more speed to offer.

Right - and speed is only an issue if your neighbour is running a porn site out of his house. Comcast, however, crushes anyone attempting to do this - so you should be good. Shame they don't cache Netflix though (my cable company does, and there is very little, or often no, buffering).

When I use Netflix through Comcast, the film/show/whatever usually takes about 10 seconds* to start playing.

*Correction, at most 10 seconds, usually much less.

I have Comcast cable Internet and Netflix plays within a couple seconds almost every time, and never skips a beat, no matter what device I'm watching it on, or what room I'm in.

So since I already have Comcast cable, would they just use the same cable coming in now for both TV and Internet, and then I'd use WiFi for the desktop in the other room? Or, would they need to drop a new cable somewhere else?

Comcast cable and Internet come into my house through the same hole in the wall that, presumably, the cable company has been using before it was Comcast. The router is behind my TV, and all the computers and other devices in the house connect wirelessly (except the Xbox). Had the same hookup at the old house.

Yes, it's all the same cable. They can, if you want, run a new cable to a different location in your house.

My Comcast installer ran a second line for the Internet for me.

So I'm investigating Comcast cable, as of now, the DSL is fairly stable, but the land line says "Line in Use", and I can't make or receive calls on the land line. Do you think the DSL filter is blown? Has someone hacked my phone line? Bad router? Ideas?

Sounds like a bad filter, since the internet signal is clearly interfering with your ability to make phone calls. Probably worth a call to the phone company, or check their website for support.

How many filters do you have in use? You could always start unplugging those lines, and test one line plugged in at a time, with different filters, to see if that is the issue.

We have someone coming out on Tuesday. We have two phone jacks in the house. One that's plugged into just the computer, and one that's the land line. I don't have any other filters, so I'll wait until Tuesday when they come out. I hate the phone, so I won't miss getting calls on the land line for a while.

The guy showed up today, and it was nothing in my house at all. He said the wire from the pole to the house was bad. He switched that out, and voila! everything's working again!

So, as I stated in the Secret Santa thread, I am currently living with my elderly parents. I told my sister that I was going to need better cable, and internet, pronto. Since the house already had basic cable TV, we got the cabel internet as well. Even with the wifi, it's way faster than at home, so I figure we'll be switching to cable when I return from my 2 month exile.

I can only get the 3Mb version of DSL at my house. Internet speedtest shows me I actually get about 1Mb and the box is only about 1/2 mile up the road in a sparsely populated area. Comcast continues to market their great services on my street without actually offering their services on my street. (Genius)

Ouch. And here I was about to post that my upload speed is sucking today (it's usually around 4-5Mbit).

So I'm too inept to have it look all nice and shit, but I just did an ookla speed test on my phone. I got 30.94 download and 6.49 upload. Ping was 39.

Funny, I get faster download speeds from your Boston server than I do from the one in Harrisburg.
