So, Karen's laptop took a dump a few weeks back (the screen hinge started coming unhinged and then she started getting the blue screen of death), so I switched her to my outdated iPad 2 to use temporarily.

She likes that fine, but since it is outdated, it is slow and sometimes it is hard to use as it can be a bit touchy, or sometimes it drops an app for no apparent reason, etc.

We had originally thought to get her laptop fixed but the only reputable place here that we could find was asking over $100 just to look at it plus labor and so on. She just bought it last year and it is barely, maybe, 15 months old (she did not get a warranty and her nephew took her to Best Buy and just chose the first one they saw for money she had).

Now, her mother sent her some cash to buy a "new" laptop that we just got yesterday.

She only needs the laptop for Skype with her mom, Facebook, email, and connecting to her online games of cards (which I think is linked to an Xbox account of her nephew), and room for photos.

Windows 10 obviously, but not a shit install, if possible.

Nothing fancy, but heavy-duty enough that the cats can step on it and it won't break - we figure that is what happened to her last one since the thing would bow under their weight.

A bigger screen might be good too since her eyes are not always the best (at least 14" probably).

I have been looking at Newegg and checking refurbished ones, too.

Price range can be upwards of $300 maybe $400, but definitely not over $400 if at all possible.

Much appreciation.

I'd go with this:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Latitude- ... Swa81aLC6W

For slightly less, this:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Latitude- ... SwICpaIGCu

Basically, they are the same laptop, but the first one is a generation newer, and has a MUCH better screen. If that's a deciding factor, get the first one. Both have a 60 or 90 day warranty. The Latitude laptops are built like tanks, and will take a beating. Very modular as well, so if you want to upgrade the SSD to a larger model, it would take all of 5 minutes to do the swap.

These are refurbished units (most often off-lease units from cubicle farms), and will probably have scratches and or dings on the exterior of the unit. I my experience, the screens and keyboard areas are in excellent condition (but check with the seller if you are picky about that).

I have no experience with the sellers listed in the two links. If you want to look elsewhere, just look for the e7440/e6430/e6440 models (make sure the 7440 has a FHD screen). Also, get one with an SSD - Karen will thank you for it. Dellrefurbished.com often has great coupons, but - in my experience - eBay sellers beat them every time.

I took Chris's advice on that model, though I bought through the Dell site when they were having a 50% off sale. I can also confirm that swapping out the hard drive for an SSD was easy. And the thing loads instantly.

We've bookmarked the model number (e7440) and will look for one with the SSD to avoid load times.

Much appreciated for the advice.

So Chris - my wife needs a new laptop as well. Basically for doing bills, internet, pictures. She doesn't do any gaming. These look good, but she asked me to ask about the Lenovo Thinkpad at work, and really likes it. She's always had Dell's at home, so I'm not worried about her using one of those.

If she likes the one she has at work, then go with that. Nothing wrong with Lenovo laptops. I don't think you'll find them as cheap as Dell, but no harm in looking. If you're concerned about specific model numbers. Send me a link before buying.
